Pattern Links

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Links to the Beaded Mitts and the Miser's Purse patterns, finally, now that signals are flowing through the AEther again despite my using a wood-burning ISP.  There are other antique patterns on the blog as well that might be useful to you guys so check out the Free Vintage Patterns List. Mostly Victorian and definitely NO doilies or baby things.

I've been intending on knitting the striped 1880s stockings for a couple years but I haven't found the right yarn yet.

Though surely an act of cruelty to children, in a FANTASY WORLD, what would you name your own little invention?

Steamy Stuff for Charity!

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 2:20 PM
You probably all already read Jake's blog, but just in case: He would like you to know about this auction, benefiting the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. It's a very cool charity drive, where artists and crafters have donated items, which [info]shadesong will use to write stories. Follow the links to the auction, or just go straight to her journal to sponsor her, read the FAQ, and look at the items. Several things are steamy.

Why do I care, in the interest of full disclosure? Because she's my friend, and because I knitted two of the things in the auction. Also, because Jake's dreamy.

You asked for it.....Garter Secrets

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 12:50 PM
I've been playing with making the garters with attaches accessories. I'm hording the vintage medical supplies but I came across some lab quality glass vials in the garage. (The other half is an environmental scientists...lots of gadgets).

Someone is watching me. Rather, someone is keeping a very close eye on our Etsy shop. I posted some new items just a few minutes ago. Before I could get here to show it off this had sold.

Peacock

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:46 AM
I'll be (hopefully) hosting a Winter Ball later this year which will be of the masque variety. I thought as host I should wear something suitably garish and noticable and so have decided on the theme of a peacock.

However, the main element I wanted to incorporate was a peacock feather eye cloak wherin the full garment had the feathers layered in such a way as to make only the beautiful eyes visible.

I was struck by an idea today though that this may well work better with a slightly Steampunk twist both for cost - since peacock feathers are really quite expensive - and appearance.

So I thought I should pop my head in here and pick your brains, figuratively speaking. Suggest a way of making peacock feather eyes out of Steampunk materials - cogs, sheet metal. &c - which makes each eye less expensive than a feather (approx. £1.40 GBP). Ideally the loose idea I have is that I'd purchase a bulk of cogs, washers and the like and sew, glue or solder them together to create the eyes I want, though I'm very unsure about this.

Due to the amount of fabric involved in the cloak I think I'm looking at using somewhere in the region of 250-500 'feathers' for the whole thing, possibly interspersed with one or two real feathers. There shall certainly be peacock feathers on whatever hat I end up wearing.

Tall Ships visit San Francisco, July 26-27

Mighty Tall Ships, people.  Probably some Sea Dogs out there too.  Get your photo taken in front of a clipper.  Climb aboard a Tall Ship and set sail...

I'll be working as a Pirate, but the rest of you might want to come for the fun.  Just found out about it.  Here is the link:  http://www.festivalofsail.org/index.asp

These would've been posted sooner but my computer's power supply took the big dirt nap last week and I couldn't replace it until I got a paycheck. The copper coils inside the old one have potential for much plotting of evil--muhuhahahaaaa!

The first one is the ubiquitous Victorian Miser's Purse. Based on an 1870s pattern. More babbling plus a half-nude hand... )

RE: ABNEY PARK - STEAMPUNK PICNIC!

Ahoy all you, Steampunk Chaps & Chapettes,

Been reading this Steampunk Fashion Extravaganza for some time now and to be fair thought that is was about time I posted something.

I live aboard my boat, in London and the South of France.  However, whenever I am moored in London, I love visiting, Abney Park Cemetery and Arboretum, (now you know where the band took there name after), I moor in Limehouse marina so it is not more that a quick subterranean train ride away and it is so wonderfully Steampunk, well they would never have named a Steampunk Band after if if it was'nt (Huzzah).

However I have always longed to have a Steampunk Sunday afternoon picknick and photoshoot there, but have never got around to it, so I was wondering if there are any of you London based Steampunk phanatics who would like to try and set an event like this up, you know lots of jolly old pork pies and ham sandwiches
and lashings of Ginger Beer.

If there are any like minded people out would you mind awfully getting in contact with me at: nemo@itbloke.net so we can try and set it up.

Thanks for you time in this matter I really do look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to give it a go,

Kind Regards & Toodle Pip for Now, Chaps and Chapettes,

T.T.F.N . -  Dâvid Nèmo
